BMS students learn cyber smarts from Google Roadshow

BLYTHEWOOD — Blythewood Middle School students recently got a hands-on lesson in navigating the digital world safely and responsibly when the campus hosted the Google Online Safety Roadshow.

The interactive presentation taught practical strategies for protecting personal information, identifying potential online scams, and making smart choices on social media. Presenters also emphasized the importance of positive digital citizenship and treating others with respect in online spaces.

School staff noted that with students constantly using screens for both classwork and socializing, teaching digital awareness has become essential.

“Internet safety is such an important skill for our students because technology is a part of nearly everything they do,” said Amanda Babcock, a seventh-grade social studies teacher. “The Google Roadshow gave them a fun and memorable way to learn how the choices they make online can have real-world consequences.”

School counselor Erin Tidwell echoed that message, pointing out that online habits often mirror behavior in the hallways.

“We want our students to feel confident using technology while also understanding how to protect themselves and make responsible decisions online,” said Tidwell, an eighth-grade counselor. “Programs like this help reinforce that being a good digital citizen is just as important as being a good citizen in our school community.”
