WINNSBORO — Laurens Academy blew past Richard Winn 50-18 in the season opener, but the Eagles saved their best for last.
Richard Winn delivered Friday night at Ruff Field, upsetting previously undefeated Laurens Academy 28-24.
Richard Winn set the tone early on both sides of the ball, taking a 14-8 lead into halftime. Laurens fought back in the third behind senior quarterback Ethan Collins and running back Caleb Hardy, battling ahead 24-22 entering the final period.
The Eagles dug deep, engineering a gritty, fourth-quarter drive to reclaim the lead for good at 28-24. The Eagle defense then locked down in the closing minutes, turning away the Crusaders’ final push to preserve the upset.
The Eagles look to carry momentum into the postseason this Friday in Batesburg for a clash with region champion W.W. King Academy (8-1) in the opening round of the SCISA 8-Man state playoffs.
